A Collaborative Effort Brings Water Security to the Community
The Rotary Club of Colombo Mid Town, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Wariyapola and the generous support of the Rotary Club of Falkoping, Sweden, successfully completed the rehabilitation of three vital irrigation tanks in Wariyapola on January 21, 2023.
This transformative project involved extensive restoration work, including desilting, repairing sluice gates, reconstructing the anicut, and rehabilitating the tank bund. To maximize the impact, farmers were provided with essential training on tank maintenance and water-efficient cultivation practices.
The restored tanks – Karagaswewa, Kuda wewa, Tissawa Maha Wewa, and Kudalugahamula Wewa (alias Timbirigahamula Wewa) – will directly benefit over 100 farming families. By ensuring a stable water supply for both main and off-season paddy cultivation, this project is expected to significantly increase crop yields and improve the livelihoods of local farmers.
This endeavor was made possible through a Global Grant from the Rotary Foundation, a testament to Rotary’s commitment to sustainable development and community empowerment. The Rotary Club of Colombo Mid Town extends its sincere gratitude to the Rotary Club of Wariyapola and the Rotary Club of Falkoping for their invaluable contributions to this life-changing project.
